There is no question that the steel pipe markets have always been quite competitive. For producers of this piping, the fluctuating market continues to present new challenges. For distributors of steel pipe, the main challenge is to successfully retain older markets and move into new ones.

However, regardless of how volatile the market is, there are certain distributors and manufacturers who have made it through the tough times. Many of these companies are part of the National Association of Steel Pipe Distributors (NASPD).

History of the NASPD

The initial meeting of the NASPD occurred on April 17, 1975. It was hosted by Jerry Rubenstein and Peter Knowles. On this date, 51 steel pipe distributors sent 68 representatives to the meeting. The first Executive Director of the organization was Suzanne Letch, who remained in this post until 1979. During her time, she assisted in putting together the first annual conference that occurred the following year. More than 200 members and guests attended.

However, the NASPD is about much more than just social gatherings and conventions. By 1978 the organization had released the very first edition of “The Tubular Products Manual.” When 1989 arrived, they had an entire list of publications and materials that specifically addressed steel pipe distributors, which included:

  • Site Inspection/Safety Requirements Appraisal
  • Pipe Handling Video
  • Hazcom Training Package
  • The Pipe Distribution and Compliance Manual for OSHA
  • The Tubular Products Manual
  • Pipeline Magazine

Additional educational materials and publications followed, which included the NASPD Fundamental of Steel Pipe Products and the NASPD Training Manual. The organization even started offering educational classes, which included the OCTG Specialty Education Class, which took place in 2009. By 2011, NASPD was beginning to gain recognition from several prominent people in the industry by creating a Hall of Fame.

Classification and Production Methods of Welded Steel Pipe

Many North American clients prefer welded steel pipe because it is more affordable, readily available and offers a more consistent thickness. These appealing characteristics are produced by the material used, along with the production methods.

Classification of Welded Steel Pipes

Welded steel pipes are created by taking flat substrates, such as HR coil or a steel plate and shaping then welding them. The pipe is then classified based on the approach used. One thing professionals consider is if the steel pipe is spiral welded or straight seam welded. Others device the material based on the purpose – i.e. manufacturing, agricultural, oil drilling, mining, etc.

One of the most common ways to classify a welded steel pipe is to look at the process used. This means classifying the steel pipes based on the production methods or the sub-processes. The results achieved will fall into one of the three following classifications.

ERW – Electric Resistance Welded                  

This process is either low or high frequency. It is restricted to a size of (maximum) about 24” in diameter. This welded steel pipe results from the longitudinally welded HR coil.

DSAW or LSAW – Longitudinal

The primary substrate used in this method is a heavy steel plate. Producers will choose one of the following two methods, which include:

  • Submerged arc welded – SAW
  • Double submerged arc welded – DSAW

The flat plate that results will have a straight seam stretched the entire length of the pipe. The standard sizes for this pipe option range between 12 and 18m. When this method is used, the quality of the weld is higher and features fewer defects.

Spiral Welded Longitudinal or Spiral Welded

This process, just as the name implies, results from a circular motion. The manufacturer will take the plate and wind and weld the substrate of the steel plate or HR coil in a spiral. This is a method that is referred to as helical submerged arc welded (HSAW). The product resulted is much thicker and longer than the other methods. In most cases, this is the preferred method because it is cost-effective, fast, efficient and simple.

Regardless of how a welded steel pipe is classified, the market for distributors and producers is extremely strong. A company that offers a diverse option of welded steel pipes is able to maintain consistent profits. Which Pipe Product Is Best? Part 2: New Structural Products

In this part, I’m going to cover different types of new structural products that could work for you. New structural comes in many shapes but I’m going to cover pipe and tubing that is round. Many steel mills produce oil country grade material. When they create steel there a chance for some to be rejected. We accumulate these rejects and sell them for fencing. CBI also imports and purchases domestically new round pipe and tubing. There are several different options and I know we can find the best fit for you!

New reject is a term commonly used in the pipe business. It refers to rejects that steel mills can’t sell at a premium price because of a minor defect. We purchase this pipe and offer it to customers as a new fencing product. It is extremely sturdy and strong with no fluid ran through it. Some come with ends that are upset, or larger than the tube, and some come plain end with no upset ends.

Which Pipe Product Is Best? Part 1: Used Oilfield Products

This week I’m going to talk about used oilfield products. We do a lot of oil country business. So, it’s no surprise we accumulate large quantities of used oil country pipe, sucker rods and wire rope. Used products like these are excellent for feedlot and property fencing. Used oilfield products are different than other fencing products in that they are heavy, with thick walls and longer lengths. OCTG (Oil Country Tubular Goods) needs to be strong to withstand the pressures of a well. Wall thickness is larger; cable is thicker, and the pieces usually come threaded with couplings.

Tubing is one of the most widely used products for fencing I can think of. Tubing comes in many different diameters and wall thicknesses. But the most commonly used tubing items are 2 3/8”, 2 7/8” and 3 ½”. They are typically used for posts and top rail. They can also be used as railing for applications that call for more strength.

Casing is a very strong and larger product for fencing. It is often used for bulls, buffalo and other large livestock fencing. The most common sizes of casing that are used are 4 ½”, 5 ½” and 7”. Casing can be used for countless applications including corner posts, H-braces and bollards. Believe me, if you need strength and size oilfield casing is the way to go.

Sucker Rods and Wire Rope are perfect for railing. The sizes of sucker rods are ¾”, 5/8”, 7/8” and 1”. They come in 25’ lengths and include a coupling for seamless railing on longer stretches of fence. Wire rope comes in many different types and sizes. The most coming types for fencing are shot line and sand line. Shot line is more expensive but difficult to source. Sand line is cheaper and easier to accumulate. Both work perfectly.
