Cattle Guard Info – Cattle Guards, also known as stock gaps and cattle grids, have been used throughout the United States for over 150 years. They are ideal for containing cattle or livestock in an area with a high traffic entrance. Many pasture and ranching entrances have heavy duty gates to keep cows where they need to be. But areas with higher traffic, especially near highways and roads, are better suited for a cattle guard. Here we’ll take a closer look at what cattle guards are and how they’re effective.
As you might expect, these products are used for livestock and wildlife containment. As mentioned previously, high traffic areas cannot have heavily secured gates that must be opened and closed constantly. Additionally not every entrance is worth spending a lot of money on automatic gates. Therefore it’s recommended that folks use cattle guards. They are used by farmers and engineers to prevent crossing by taking advantage of the animals instincts. Scientists believe these animals may have learned they can’t cross cattle guards by individual experiences or the more common observation of other individuals in the heard and their reaction to such barriers. Today we won’t get into the chicken and the egg metaphor but, we will go ahead and mention that regardless of which came first the herd learns quickly.
Many people do not know that there are a few different types of cattle grids available. My favorite has to be the use of painted lines on roads that have the same effect on cattle that actual heavy duty pipe guards do. While painted deterrents are interesting, they are cost prohibitive because of the constant repainting needed. Although, it is incredibly interesting that farmers have used these painted lines for hundreds of years as an alternative to commercial products.
