Cattle guards, or cattle grids, have been implemented by humans since before Romans inhabited The British Isles. The first recorded domestication of cattle were by Western Asian peoples somewhere between 6,000-8,000 years ago. During ancient times reflective stone tile was used in place of wood or metals. Later, Americans would use them to protect railroad lines in the mid 1800’s. Subsequently, modern guards seem to have been independently invented in multiple locations through the American Great Plains in the early 20th Century. For all of recorded history these applications have been used by farmers. It’s quite amazing to think technology we use use for livestock today was implemented in similar ways thousands of years ago!
The products CBI Pipe provides are manufactured with steel pipe. We have two types of guards available. The larger and heavier options are made out of 7″ for the base, 5 1/2″ for the braces and 2 7/8″ for the runners. Our heavy option also comes with plate skirting. They are sold in three sizes – 7′ x 12′, 7′ x 16′ and 7′ x 20′.
Our economy cattle guards are also made with 5 1/2″ for the braces and 2 7/8″ for the runners. They do not come with the 7″ or skirting but discounted accordingly. They are sold in two sizes – 6′ x 12′ and 6′ x 16′. Overall CBI has what you need when it comes to cattle guards for your project!
